Champions to pasture: The old-age and disability pension of the horses veterans of the Palio Race in Siena (Italy)
What happen to the injured horses after the Palio Race in Siena? Once they were brought down. Today they enjoy their disability pension. An agreement between the Municipality of Siena and the Italian Forest Department, permits to all the veterans of the Palio Race of living serenely in the Horse Center of the Caggio, situated in the wonderful country area of Radicondoli (Siena). Here specialized persons take care of them and of the other horses of the center. The history: Fenosu, that won the Palio Race on August 16 1986 for the contrada of the Giraffe, maintains his lonely character even if he is old and lives in pension. Pegaso, that carried the colors of the contrada of the Caterpillar, after a reckless run during the race on August 16 1994, was recovered in bad conditions in the veterinary clinic of San Pietro in Barca. Now he is fine and pastures quietly in the country of the Caggio area. Zullina had a tendon broken while leading the Palio Race on July 2 2001, now she is mother of the small Osmunda Regalis.
