BUCOVINA the region of the painted churches (Romania)
The Bucovina is situated in the north of Romania. It is an agricultural region but it is famous for its wonderful churches frescoed also in the external walls and considered between the most important works of art in Europe. In fact, in the 1993, they have been collectively included in the Patrimony of the Humanity by Unesco. When the Bucovina was threatened by the Turks, the popular armies gathered together inside the walls of the monasteries waiting for the enemy. Most of the soldiers were illiterate, for this reason they were not allowed to enter in church. Therefore the most important Biblical history were illustrated on the external walls of the churches, by frescos similar to comic strips for educating also those persons who could not enter in the churches.
